బతుకమ్మ పాట
బతుకమ్మ పండుగ is the colorful festival of Telangana AP region dedicated to Goddess Gouri.
It is believed that she was dressed or used various types of flowers to when trying to get attention of Lord Shiva. These use of flowers signify that these simple flowers can make things gorgeous to get even the attention of Lord Shiva.
It is a custom to use atleast 3 types of flowers in decorating the bathukamma.
When in India, we use 'Tangedu puvvu', 'Gunugu puvu' importantly and another type can be any like the chamanti, banthi.
Girls and Women of all ages dress beautifully, decorate bathukamma colorfully and have gauramma on top of it.
I still remember my grandma sitting in a chair singing these long songs, we all sisters with my mom and aunts used to put the bathukamma in the middle of our backyard and sing along with our grandma , and circling round the bathukammas.
We used enjoy it a lot then. Although sometimes it feels like they tried to force those customs and traditions onto us - in a way we learnt atleast something - but after coming to US, I now miss all that hulchul we used to have. Infact I think I learnt the importance of the culture and traditions that should not be lost through the generations and but should be maintained proudly.
This year, I felt happy during this bathukamma season, that I got a chance to attend a gathering here in Detroit. It is organized by the Detroit Bathukamma Assoc.. somthing. There was huge turnout for it and all telanganites. I made a small bathukamma myself.
It was good to see all of them speaking Telangana :)
Anyways, I prepared myself with couple of songs which my mom and grandma taught me.
రావు రావు గౌరమ్మా, నీవు రావు మా ఇంటి గనక (౨)
గుమ్మాడి పూలతోటి , నీకు నే(ను) గుడి కట్టిచ్చినాను రావు
గోరెంట పూలతోటి , నీకు నే(ను) గోడ కట్టిచ్చినాను రావు
గన్నేరు పూలతోటి , నీకు నే(ను) గద్దె కట్టిచ్చినాను రావు
కట్లాయి పూలతోటి , నీకు నే(ను) కడప కట్టిచ్చినాను రావు
గుర్జెత్తు బంగారం , నీకు నే(ను) గుండ్లు చేయించినాను రావు
పావులెత్తు బంగారం , నీకు నే(ను) పట్టడ చేయించినాను రావు
తులమెత్తు బంగారం , నీకు నే(ను) తుస్సె చేయించినాను రావు
Next song is for putting Gouramma to sleep - we sing it at the end or before putting bathukamma into the waters.
